NATIONAL GALLERY, LONDON
Monday 22 June, 1-2pm at the National Gallery, London. I’ll be in conversation with Dr Susanna Avery-Quash, expert on the history of the National Gallery. We will be discussing the opportunities over the 19th century for working-class employment and study at the National Gallery and associated art colleges, including the Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts: the latter housed alongside the National Gallery on Trafalgar Square. George Tinworth (1843-1913), a contemporary and neighbour of Charlie Chaplin’s grandparents, started life as a poor wheelwright in Walworth, South London, but aspired to be a sculptor. He realised his dream after studying at Lambeth School of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. Get your tickets here
